Chucky1
One of our girls, our top girl actually, (renamed zippy since she started to moult) hurt her leg on the weekend. She still seemed alert and was eating well but couldn't put any weight on one leg. So on Sunday night we put one of the nest boxes in the kitchen and let her sleep in the house. In the morning it was a lovely sunny day so we put her at the edge of the garden and gave her a bowl of sardines and sweetcorn and some water. She scoffed this down and seemed quite content so we left her to herself at the edge of the garden. Some while later we noticed that she had hobbled back to the cubes, its about 300yds, hopped up the cube ladder and into the nestbox to lay her egg. Brings a bit of a lump to my throat. She's doing great now and I'll think twice before interfering again
Plum
She's a creature of habit, but it was probably you giving her a rest in the house to stop her using her leg that enabled her to get up into the cube.

Thank you Plum - so we did the right thing? Its nice to know Oh bless her - love the name Zippy too Yes when she moulted it was in a line straight down the middle of her breast bone - looked just like a zip. Only seemed to last a couple of days and being top girl she hated the picking up and examining and fuss more than any of the others.
