Egg bound? Peritonitis

Recommended Posts

Hello All, one of my girls has been looking rather under the weather she has been standing alone pugged up not sitting with eyes closed, I thought she may be egg bound so hubby put her in the sink in some hot water, she loved it, when OH lifted her out she bokk bokked very loudly did a very large poo and he put her back in again with she enjoyed. OH and son blow dried her with again she loved and she went out and did another very large poo. She perked up but yesterday she was back to standing on her own puffed up and eyes closed, she runs to me when I go out and is eating. This morning I went to the nest box and she was eating her egg, it had shell but think it must have been a softie, could she have been egg bound for 3 days? she still looks very round. I had to change their feed as the store did not get my usual ex batt stuff, I think the change in feed has not helped. They will be back to Allen and Page on Friday.

Could it be peritonitis if she laid and egg (not even sure she did lay it or just caught eating it)

If she has peritonitis, then her abdomen will feel full of water and be quite round. They don't lay eggs if they have this. See Moochoo's thread on the subject here.

If the hen is egg bound, then she will have an egg stuck in her oviduct somewhere and will be straining to lay with no egg being produced..

Either case would warrant a visit to the vet if you're not sure what you're doing.

There are a few other reasons fro a hen not laying - the first thing I'd do is worm her with some Flubenvet.
