Chickens in a rental property

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting chickens and I have finally persuaded other half that its a good idea. I've been lurking a lot round here trying to get an idea of how much time it will take up and what it will entail. Haven't told OH how addictive they seem to be though :D

It will probably be a while until I can get some because we are yet to move into our own place. However, we might be moving into a rented house in a few months times so my question is - how many of you have chickens in a rental place and how did you persuade your landlord to let you have them? Or do I have to wait until we own a house? :(

Hi ant3,

Chickens like nothing better than trashing manicured lawns and flower beds. If you look back at some old threads you'll see that some people were really concerned about the amount of damage being done to their water logged gardens.

You might save youself some angst by waiting until you're in your own place - just my 2 cents.

I was going to maybe suggest that I have a permanent run with woodchip, fence off any flour beds and promise to re-turf before we left. Do you think anyone would go for that?

I would so love to have chickens this year. Its even my birthday around the time when we would be moving so I could wangle an eglu + chickens for my birthday. Merrydale is only down the road and other half has promised 3 of whatever I like from there as long as he gets to name one.

Welcome to the forum. I think it really depends on your landlord, and also on the size and type of garden. If you have a permanent site, and returf it before you leave, then I don't see why they should object, but people can be funny about chickens. There is no need for them to wreck the garden. If you limit free-ranging hours and fence off anything tender or delicate, then established shrubs should be ok and they won't necessarily wreck the lawn. The worst damage my hens have done is digging dustbaths in the flower border, and digging up a lot of bulbs in the process. There certainly are people on here who keep hens at rented properties, you may have to wait a little while for someone to come along!

I can't imagine a rental place is going to have many delicate plants tbh. Well I hope not because I'm not very green fingered and the plants will die regardless of having chickens.

Free-range hours would be limited to after work and most of the weekend. I'm planning on getting an eglu + extension, I've read on the board that this should be enough space for 3 chickens with limited free-ranging. Is this right?

My advice is to get bantams and limit their free range time. I've got three pekins with an Eglu Classic and run in a small city garden, I let them FR for a couple of hours in the morning and again in the evening - and I've netted off all the bits of the borders that I really cherish - and the garden looks fine. I poo pick every day and sweep the patio, but it's no hassle as they're so small that they're not a poo-tastic force for destruction! I love them, they are so cute and ace.

I'm a landlord and would welcome tenants who want to keep chickens. In fact, most rental agreements although they may say no pets, must be flexible enough that you have to have really good reasons for enforcing that clause.

I would want a say in where they went ( fixed place preferably as you are right, they would trash the grass) and I'd probably ask for a larger deposit in case there was damage. The landlord cannot " unreasonably" withhold permission for pets etc.

if you get the neighbours on your side too that helps

You've given me hope, Patricia. Hopefully, we'll find a nice, understanding landlord perhaps one with chooks themselves who'll understand. Wonder if anyone on the board has a house to rent in Rugby?

I've read somewhere that the Allotment Act says that no one can stop you having chickens or rabbits but this probably isn't the route you want to go down with someone who can evict you

Hello,

I have chickens on a rented property and was really unsure about asking our landlord but they said yes as long as the neighbours didn't mind!

We keep them in one place and allow them to free range for a couple of hours in the evening... the garden is coping fine at the moment but it is early days!

Go for it!

Check with the neighbours and landlord!

You've made me all excited now. Fingers crossed that in September I can finally get my chooks. I'll have a two year wait if we can't or if we don't move to a rental property after all. Why does it take so long to save up for a house deposit? :(
