egg covered in a white skin?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Lucy was poorly in the early hours of the morning on Sunday then laid a softie. She hasn't laid another egg this week.

Today she looked poorly again, her wings were dropped, she fluffed up and limped around. Shortly after she laid a bit of egg white, then a normal shelled egg which was enclosed in a white skin which peeled off. There were also soft blue lumps on it that I wiped off. Are these calcium deposits? Is the egg safe to eat? I have a photo if needed.

Chickens are on day 5 of flubenvet treatment with no treats except a dandelion leaf once at the moment. :boohoo:

Thanks, she hasn't laid a softie or a normal egg in the last couple of days. She looks well. I'll see how she goes over the next few weeks and if she becomes ill I'll take her to the vet, but otherwise she is welcome to be a freeloader. Hopefully, she will start laying properly again soon.

Heya just saw the pic and thought it looked familiar. EWhen I first got my hens the one seemed a little ditsy and layed standing up and never in the nesting box! The one day I was happy eating my dinner and watching them out the patio window when out popped an egg! it had the white membrane on it too and cus I'd never seen it before I looked it up...apparebtly its like the lubrication it needs to come out. It usually dries up immediatly or the chickens wipe it with their bums but sometimes when they haven't laid in a while its too thick to do either. So apparently its normal but shows they haven't laid well for a while which may be reminense of a past or present illness - however it's safe to eat.

Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi, thanks Katie. I've only just seen this post. I think she was slightly under the weather possibly due to laying lots of softies at the time. i wonder if the worming caused it. She has been fine since and has been laying eggs almost every day again. :D
