Hybrid Egg Size

Recommended Posts

My gold star lays good sized eggs about 65g and bigger.

Amber Star is not far behind - her eggs look much smaller but only weigh a little less.

My other two hybrids - Black Star and the Speckledy haven't started laying yet. :(

I would guess that most hybrids lay similar sized eggs but I know that Black Rocks are slightly larger hens.

BTW I put a second perch in the Solway. I did it at right angles to the main one so they perches form a sort of L shape. It has worked out well and it meant no hole cutting :)

Sounds like I shouldn't have too much trouble with egg size which ever hybrid I go for, unfortunately Carol, my Black Rock who had her neck and bottom feathers stripped by Pippa, lays 3 normal eggs a week and 3 tiny wind eggs with no yolk - I'm hoping with Pippa gone that she will revert to normal egg laying.

Very clever with the second perch in the Solway  , I don't think I'd of thought of that. Do you think that some of the joins round the base are likely to harbour red mite or will the fact its plastic put them off? I'm really paranoid and dust all the gaps with Diatom every time I clean the house.

I think I do the same as you. I put diatom everywhere. I think every hen house has those sort of joins (including the eglu - where the front meets the base bit) so I don't think any house will be red mite proof. I just hope I never get them!

Good luck with the hens and I hope Pippa's eggs sort themselves out. :D
