Lost my poor Taffy today

Recommended Posts

I went to let the girls out to free range today, and when I didn't see Taffy, I checked to see if she was laying and found her dead in the eglu, on the roosting bars positioned as if she had died in her sleep.

I have no idea what happened to her, she was under a year old, and as late as 6pm last night she was free ranging happily, plenty of energy and hungry as ever. She had laid an egg yesterday, and aside from laying an almost perfectly white egg a few days ago, nothing seemed different at all. Poops were normal and her body looked fine. Her comb was a bit darker than normal, almost bluish, but it was fine last night and I suspect it just may be to pooling blood (since she died with her head down.) My other two girls seem fine and unaffected. I have just gotten done landscaping a few weeks before, but I was adamant about using nothing but nontoxic plants and no chemical fertilizers or insecticides. They have free ranged for several weeks now without issue.

I've broken apart the eglu and given it a thorough cleaning, but I didn't see any bugs or anything else that seems like it would have affected her health. I'm at a loss.

It's just so shocking to come out to a beautiful day and find a poor dead chook in the coop.
