Hi all

 

Im getting 4 pekin girls all different colours in a month or so and other than their feet is their any advice you can give me about them I have read up but as we used to say about puppies we sold the animal cant read the book so itwont act the same.

 

So any advice or anythign about them I should knwo from your experiences ? thanks

They go broody at the drop of a hat.

There amazing little characters and very entertaining to watch, expecailly when there mardy-bums! There beautiful, some are loud, but most are quiet, depends on the actual hen. They get quite mucky bums, but are amazing pets, and don't mind being handled, after a few weeks, when they get used to you. Handle them frequently, if they peck hold down on there backs for a few seconds to declare dominance. I have 2 Pekins, i lost my third girl to a fox, though. They are really beautiful, and i recommend these, i hope to see some pictures soon. They lay OK but as i said go broody allot.

I have three and they are fantastic. Really funny and happy to be handled. They don't seem to be massive egg producers - one of mine lays four a week, another has only laid one egg so far, and the other hasn't laid at all yet - but the eggs are delicious when they do get round to it! Molly is right about the mucky bum thing - one of mine has had a couple of baths already - but other than that they are (so far) super-easy to look after.

I have six pekin girls (pics on my blog, link in my signiture) and agree with all of the above. I tend to trim the fluff around their bums to keep them a bit cleaner. They are marvellous characters, and do benefit from a covered run with some kind of bedding rather than just on mud. My girls choose to stay in when the weather is bad, as they really don't enjoy getting their feet mucky. Enjoy them

I knew about the eggs and broodyness my Marsh Daisy's shouldnt go broody so I dont care about that my sussex go broody but hey natural thing.

 

I knew about feet etc except the bums I might clip so it is clean but then again my sussex have super fluffy bums and their clean and they arnt on mud some concrete some bark some walking across the perches or roof of the covered run.

Only one of my pekins (my cuckoo, Nugget) gets a grubby bum - my white and buff girls have no problem at all with that.

Oh good im not too worried.

 

Im getting a black, a lavander, a silver partridge and a light silver partirdge which is a genetic throw back basically it is really light silvery blue with mottled dark silver.

They sound gorgeous! I considered getting a silver partridge one but it was quite similar to my cuckoo one and my neighbour's little boy complains that he can't see the darker ones from his bedroom window, so I went for buff instead - the partridge have beautiful markings though. I love the lavender ones but couldn't find anywhere nearby selling them when I was buying. You'll have a lovely rainbow flock! (Is it a 'flock' of chickens? I can't remember.)

The breeder is amazing Simon and Karen really care about their birds and they are all show stock. They is room in the inn if not it is worth visiting if you can the variety of birds is amazing. But they do not sell their rosecombs because they are their youngest sons .

I have 4 and one is a pekin frizzle ...

 

I must admit though they do go very broody ... They are lovely though ... You can make them very tame

My sussex go broody so so much but I dont mind their happy so I just want cute chickens.

 

I really want to show my pekins next year.

I love my pekins to bits - they are the funniest, silliest chickens that I own.

One of mine jumps at her own shadow and scares the socks off of herself and the other thinks that she's the same size as a cochin and must be obeyed. She'll also announce everything. She'll announce her egg, the others egg, our dog in the garden, a child in the garden, a fly in the run, a leaf floating past.........

I would love to have them all being funny but I knwo I will have some little bossy boots.

 

I have 4 comign so I bet I will have a full range of characteristics.
