CHICKTER

how long after

Recommended Posts

hi there we had a broody sitting on 4 eggs.

one got crushed 2 died and 1 hatched yippee my question is this is it possible for my broody to sit on more eggs now that she has got a little chick cheeping and running around her she is still sitting on her nest letting the chick run under for heat and she has been teaching the chick about eating and drinking but im wondering as we only had 1 hatch can we put some other eggs under her so that she may hatch them also or will she get up and ignore them and focus all her attention on the chick we would like to hatch get at least another chick for it to grow up with any ideas would be greatly appreciated......

also how long does a broody stay broody or does she have bouts of broodiness or is it a once a year thing.

none of my other hens seem to be broody they are all ex bat hens my cockerel is always jumping on his girls so i should have 1 or 2 fertile eggs....

Sorry to hear that your hatch wasn't too successful, however mum will need to focus her time on her baby. She will only stay inside for the first day or so then will want to be out all day with her baby. So I wouldn't try putting eggs under her. You could see if you could get a day old chick from somewhere and slip it under her at night she may take it depending on how old her chick is.
