AmberSky Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 I have a sick girl, not quite sure what is wrong though i suspect sour crop, i managed to empty it yesterday but i still took her to the vets today and he did not seem to know as much as me and still charged me £30 for agreeing with my diagnosis and 10ml of Baytril and a couple of syringes to administer it. Just thought if there is anywhere i could get baytril without a prescription? Redwing Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 Now that my vet has done a 'flock check' ie checked that my birds are generally healthy and is assured that I have some knowledge they will prescribe things for me and I pick them up at reception and pay for just the drugs I dont know if thats because I have a 'smallholding' and a holding number though and in some eyes would be seen as a professional (which I am far from!) Chucky Mama Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 I think that if a vet is happy with your knowledge and can say that they have prescribed for 'animals under their care' they are happy to let you have it. Not only as Redwing says is there a danger of misdiagnosing but there is always a concern that drug resistances can occur as a result of the overuse of antibiotics. If you just need an 'extention' of the baytril that your vet gave you they may well give you a repeat presciption of it without a consultation as that chicken is still technically 'under their care' Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
The Dogmother Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 If she has sour crop, then antibiotics don't usually help much, in fact they can make the yeast infection worse. ISCA Posted June 21, 2010 Share Posted June 21, 2010 As it is a prescription only medicine the Vet could be rightly accused of being negligent to give you the medicine without actually seeing the animal, assessing it and making an informed diagnosis. Just as doctors would be if they prescribed antibiotics to patients without actually seeing them. It is not considered good practice. I certainly would not do it.
