Redwing
I've also heard bad reports The makers say that you can return them to have a film fitted over the plate which makes it warmer but that wont help you with this lot of chicks Piling up the shavings was a good idea, try and keep them close to the plate

Thinking of maybe seeing if the hen what hatched out a chick last week will take them ... What do you think ? Or do you think i should just try the silly brooder ! joza2210
In fact ... To create extra heat i could put a reptile heat mat under some shavings ... What does everyone think of that ? Josh

Redwing
If they are in a warm room they will be ok with just the eco glow, if they are cold they will get noisy so you will know

Is it 95 then drop 5 every week until you get to room temperature
Redwing
I've no idea, I just work on the theory that if they are huddled up and squeeking they are cold, if they are trying to get away from the heat they are too hot, if they are huddled in a heap and relaxed or nicely spread out I figure they are happy
AbigailGrace
Do you know if the electric hen is better than the eco glow? I'm currently looking at them. I hear its just the legs that are a bit naff on the electric hen. Sorry to barge in.

I hear its just the legs that are a bit naff on the electric hen. Sorry to barge in. The eco glow is very low wattage and the idea is that chicks need to be virtually touching it, there have been reports of cold chicks I'd go with the electric hen, I wouldnt be without mine now - the legs are fiddly but I make two higher than the other two, that way the chicks can get close to it or not close, that means it needs less adjusting! Madchook
I would think the ecoglow and a heat mat combined in a warm room would be too hot?? I use a reptile mat when I am weaning chicks off heat and it seems to work well. When they get to that point where they only sit on top of the hen, I change it (although I put the mat under the brooder not in - still seems to transfer a fair amount of heat which is why I would worry it might be a bit much). They then progress to a catbox which is in the growers pen in the day then just pop it back on the mat inside at night. Electric hens are great, but I agree the legs are a pain. Biggest pain is cleaning them as the legs have grooves, I think the hen is probably the vector for transferring a respiritory infection in my case - lesson learnt hard way! This time it will be Virkon and a toothbrush!
