Unusually Quiet Hen

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

Grateful for your advice on this. We have a 2 year old Miss Pepperpot who is normally a happy hen, eager & nosy around the run. Today she is practically glued to the laying nest in the Eglu. Her comb and wattle are bright red, she is panting (breathing through her mouth) and generally quiet. Her eyes are wide open.

We have picked her up and put her outside, she then pecks a bit of grass, has a drink and then goes back to the nestbox and sits down. She doesn't complain about being picked up at all so we couldn't tell if this was just her being broody.

She hasn't laid recently (ie the last couple of days) and when she did a poo just now it was just clear mucus type liquid/slightly tending to slightly white'ish.

She is standing OK but doesn't move very much - certainly not hunched over or anything. Her vent is pulsing.

We wondered is she might be trying to lay but for some reason can't? Maybe she is just very hot - tho she has never shown any symptoms like this before.

Worried of Gosport.

Just an up date. She is far better today - more like her old self and has just laid a very soft egg. She is moving around more, and is certainly not spending anything like as much time on the nest box.

Phew - we are relieved. :D
