Feather pecking help

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Hoping someone can help. I have 3 hens: Betty, Phyllis and Marge. Betty has been pulling feathers out of marge so that marge is now completely bald over her bum and has patches on her neck and chest. I've seen Betty pulling the odd feather out of Phyllis as well but she seems to have stood up to it quite well. We have tried the anti-pecking spray but that did nothing to deter Betty. We tried putting a beak-bit on her but she has quite a small beak and she gets it off again instantly. We try to keep her separate from the other two if we can during the day but that's not always possible. They're getting plenty of layers meal.

Despite this the feather pecking is still going on, poor Marge is half bald.

Does anyone have any other ideas for how I can get on top of this?

Please help :|

Sounds as if the beak bit was not inserted into the right place.

If you aim it towards the back of the nostrils, and use some straight circlip pliers, it makes the job a whole lot easier.

Plenty of greens in the run for them to peck at can provide distraction
