free ranger 101
hi i had 6 ex batts but ubfortunately i lost 2 soon after adopting them and have lost 2 at the weekend due to red mite! ive just ordered my 1st eglu as the house i so lovingly built is completely infested and we cant get rid of them, so my 2 lonely girls are living in make shift accommodation. however when i get my new eglu i would really like to add 1 more chicken, maybe a different breed, but im not sure if you can add just one chicken or if the others will kill it etc. has any one got any advice pleeeeeeease! sezra
Hi. Sorry to hear about losing your hens. I haven't had any experience of introducing new hens myself but my friend who also keeps chickens has. She introduced a lone chicken to her existing two and it got picked on. Apparently you should introduce a minimum of two chickens to avoid this. She then ended up having to get further two chickens to balance things out ending up with five ! They all get on fine now and she is looking to get more ! Good luck. Egluntyne
I would recommend adding 2. The Eglu itself is big enough, but you will need to extend the run, as the standard run will not accommodate 4 sucessfully. They will squabble and won' t have enough room. Some advice about managing intros **here** .
sezra
She then ended up having to get further two chickens to balance things out ending up with five ! I should have mentioned that she has a cube so fortunately could accommodate all the 'extras'!
