Doody
Hi, Ok, well ive just had my first proper hold of one of my chooks. She was really chilled out and all went well. However im itching, and found two small what looked like mites, eeek. Not a nice feeling, is this the red mite ive seen. Ive only had them 3 days, but ill get some of that red mite dust to treat them. Dont want my little girl itching and being covered in them after she has hold them. There was only 2, possibly 3 on me, but i feel itchy now......
Ain't Nobody Here
Could be lice . Have you checked her vent? You may see clusters of whitish eggs at the base of the feathers and you should see little pale critters. Have a look here to see the difference. Easily treatable if it's lice! No i havent, ive only had them 3 days and ive seen nothing that has given me reason to worry. They eat well, drink well, and look very happy. As its getting dark now, ill have a look in the morning. All i can say was they was white and about 2mm long. Like i said, i had 2 possibly 3 on me, so hopefully i can sort it out asap. Also, there no danger to us or children are they? Roobaloo
Definitely sounds like lice...they're not harmful to humans as lice are generally specific to species, so while you may get some on you and get the odd itch, they won't survive on your body! Ain't Nobody Here
That certainly sounds like lice rather than red mite. Johnson's spray (available from Pets at Home) will treat it easily . More info about it here.
bennett
Def sounds like lice. Red mite dont live on the hens ( i dont think) they come out at night and feed .
Doody
Thank you, im very new to this and want to get them killed asap. Im going to have a look around my local garden centres (One has a pets corner in) and a few farm houses that are nearby. If i cant find what im looking for ill order online, but id rather get something tomorrow. Does the Johnsons spray have to be for poultry? As ive also heard that Frontline drops that you use on cats is excellent on chickens for killing mites, lice etc. Thanks again, already very found of my new girls and want to make sure they are very happy. Just had an egg on toast lol, Mmmmmm....
Ain't Nobody Here
I've not used Frontline but if you search for it on the forum, I'm sure you'll find some info about it. The Johnsons spray is for birds generally. It looks like this.
