Silly Bullfinch

Recommended Posts

Between our kitchen and dining room window is a bush and I think that a couple of bull finches must be nesting in there at the moment as we see them flying in and out all the time. It is quite cute in one way in that we get real close ups of beautiful little birds. However, it is a bit distressing to have them keep crashing into the windows. I have put paper over the kitchen one but he still keeps finding a clear bit to fly into. He is not doing it too hard but I just wondered whether anyone had any bright ideas on how to stop him - I hate the thought that he may be hurting himself. OH is just fed up with the constant tapping of his beak but he has no patience with small things!!

We had a similar problem this Spring because a Chaffinch constantly flew at our front window. This went on for three weeks but it did decrease in frequency as the days went on. I asked the vet next door what to do and she said it was a territorial thing because it saw its own reflection in the window. I tried paper, a light and chasing it away to no avail. I also hung up strips of paper in a similar way to the method used to scare birds away from fruit by hanging CD's to reflect the light. Our front window is over five metres in length and three metres high but the bird only attacked the top to middle right hand side which is beside the tree. I wonder if it would be useful to cover the window with a sheet or the enviromesh used to cover vegetables to stop it being reflective? Not very pretty but it might break what appears to be a behaviour cycle? Our poor wee bird eventually disappeared of its own accord but it was very distressing to watch and exceptionally noisy. It did keep he cat very fit because she spent ages jumping at it from inside the house. Chaos both inside and out!
