Roobaloo
I wasn't entirely sure which forum to put this is as it's sourcing chicks not raising them...if it's wrong - sorry mods!! I've been incubating 12 CLB eggs and on day 16, we're potentially down to 1 egg (though as we only saw slight movement, I won't hold my breath) So either way, I need some additional chicks. Ideally CLB as that's what I originally wanted but at this point, I'm open to suggestion providing the chicks can be sexed or returned if turn to be males. Any ideas where to get some? I'm based in Bedfordshire.
sjp
the six eggs I had were all fertile but all I ever saw was the dark mass inside 5 hatched one was DIS so unless the other 11 are clear there's still hope right up to 3 or 4 days past the due date
Roobaloo
Thanks sjp! Four were clear, two cracked, two died during early development (clear with a blood ring) and were all removed. Two of the remaining four are about 50% clear (the embryo takes up about half the space but no sign of life. The last two are mostly dark but one has a large airsac that extends down the shell and so takes is about a third of the egg. I'm not sure how to describe it but i've not seen anything similar online. I've left them all in the incy but as they're due to hatch mid-week, I want to have a back up in place. Jools
It's pretty unlikely that you'll find day olds in specific breeds at a precise time You could try posting a "wanted" on the Practical Poultry forum though ...
Roobaloo
I know, that's why I said I was open to suggestions if anyone knew of another autosexing breed that was available or if someone would take back any males (I had arranged homes for CLB cockerels so don't want to buy birds I'll have to have put to sleep). CLB are just my preference! I'm not a member of Practical Poultry...applied a few days ago but have had no response yet. EDIT: Sorry if there was any negative tone in this post! I really didn't mean any offence!! Just feeling too tired and down about this whole fiasco and not noticing my own words!! Griffin
I don't know how far away Brackley is from you but I've previously bought day olds from Luci at Birdhaus. Her number is 01280 851261. She has mostly Polands but she might have some cuckoo frizzles or Appenzellers, depends who is broody. Two weeks ago all her Pekins were broody so I doubt she'd have any of them due this week. Roobaloo
Thanks Griffin...hopefully, it's sorted... I started sending out desperate emails to all breeders in the surrounding counties for any vaguely suitable candidates... ...and the first person to email me back has not only got some just hatched chicks...but they're female CLB!!! I have everything crossed this goes well...!!
Chucky Mama
Any update?
Roobaloo
We got two female CLB! The breeder had just two left but also one Poland chick so to avoid leaving her in the same boat, I have a Poland on loan! They're 5 days old now! ...though, it's Day 22 for the egg so I'm thinking I should've just bought chicks from the start!!
