As well as taking poor Pebbles to vet this morning, I also took Poppy and Bugsy for their annual VHD vaccination. I had noticed that Bugsy has been getting quite heavy, and vet seemed to agree that he was a bit on the chunky side, so decided to weigh him. Last time I weighed him, he was 3kg, now he is 7lb which is 3.2kg, so not much difference, though it feels a lot.

So, has anyone had a fat rabbit, and if so, how do you get them to move about more?

Bugsy and his mate Chloe have been house bunnies over winter, and have taken to lounging around all day and night on my dining room chairs!!! As they share food, it will be tricky to restrict his eating of nuggets! They have lots of hay to munch on.

To start with I have moved them to the walk in chicken run after relocating chickens to fruit cage! I have built them tunnels with boxes and the green tunnels from pet shop, I have hung up dandelion leaves and grass/weeds from string so that he has to stand to reach for them.

Any other suggestions (other than chasing him around to make him run!) would be appreciated!

Do you weigh the dry food he gets? I'd get him on excel lite (won't do the other one any harm to eat it) and weigh it out carefully. Don't give him any more than the pack says he should get in 24 hours. Encourage him to eat as much hay as possible instead of munching on pellets. Don't give carrots or sweetcorn either, very fattening.

I hadn't been - but i weighed it yesterday, and it wasn't a lot. About 150g in a bowl for the two of them, and there was still some left this evening. I'll start tomorrow just giving 50g at a time and see how quick it goes down. I think it is more down to the fact that they aren't moving around as much as they used to.

Watching them in the run, they do seem to be more active when they haven't got comfy seats to lay on!
