Old Speckled Hen
I've been shopping for bee friendly plants particularly late summer/autumn flowering ones. Came home with lots of seeds But the highlight of the show was the dream garden where DH and I watched fascinated and entranced for a good five minutes as one of these visited the flowers. The first one I have EVER seen

Old Speckled Hen
It's a hummingbird hawkmoth. It's about the size of one of those huge queen bumbles you see in the spring, Its proboscis is as long as itself and it just hangs there to feed. It sounds like a little bird too. I have never seen one before. I was the other side of the flower bed and when I spotted it I started waving at DH. I was surprised how many people ignored it. Perhaps they see them every day
