In my house they have a happy retirement - eating corn and dust bathing to their hearts content without any egg laying and hormones getting in the way of their enjoyment

Ditto here, they just retirement and live happily ever after, Just because they do not lay, doesn't mean they are still not good pets

Well, I think the reason the poultry farm 'let them go' was because they were no longer laying regularly! As said above, most of us regard our hens as pets and let them live out a happy retirement even when they are no longer producing eggs.

 

If your friend is operating on a commercial basis, then I think he has to make a decision based on that. Maybe your friend should come on the forum himself if he wants advice? He might be better asking this on a forum like Practical Poultry however, where there are probably more people keeping hens for profit.
