Unsecure chicken perches

Well, Saturday saw me and OH head off to Golden Valley to find 2 new friends for Fred. After some difficult choices, we came home with a Ginger chook (Ruby), and a White Sussex (Doris)

 

Both look lovely, and the guy helping us gave us some great advice re introductions, and made sure the young chooks we took home would be OK to stand up to Fred. Can really recomend them!

 

We got them home, and let them out of the box in the garden, gave them some water and food and left them alone for a bit, hiding behind a chair, to settle. Fred at this point knew something was up - but wasn't sure what! An hour later, we let Fred out. We had the hosepipe on, and we felt ready for anything that followed! However, after a complete lack of interest by Fred at first, an hour or two later they were dustbathing together!

 

Saturday night they went to bed seperately, but then we put them all in the coop together after dark, so woke up together. The morning was a bit noisy - but nothing worse than that. Sunday night, after some dithering by Fred, they all piled in together!

 

Good old Fred for being so good with the intros!! I think we were very very lucky with her and the 2 new ones temperaments. I just hope nothing changes!

I introduced 2 chooks from GVP to a lone one and on their advice also put them straight together with no problems. I think the only is so pleased to have friends they don't bother fighting

Do you mean Golden Valley in Herefordshire? If so, do they sell bantams? I live in Hereford and haven't found it easy to source bantams.

I have done exactly the same and put the newbies in at night with not a murmer. However on discovery of their new companions in the morning we did have a bit of a shriek. But nothing terrible that I had read about.

 

2nd / 3rd night a bit of argy bargy but again all is fine. They keep out of each others way mind you and egg production has dropped off and tonight I did find a bit of poop in the nesting area.

 

Was expecting blood and gore to be truthful but nil so far

Hi, I'm in Herefordshire ( not too far from Hereford ) . Have you tried Wernlas ? they have bantams and it isn't too far to drive.Just google the wernlas collection. There is also AJR poultry, I've had chooks and hatching eggs from them, infact my permanently broody bantam silkie is from them ( sold as large fowl, but the chick she hatched is already bigger than her, so def a bantam )tends to be potluck what they have though.
