Wing Amputation

Recommended Posts

Just thought i'd share my experience with you. One of my chickens got attacked by a fox on Saturday evening. Our lovely neighbour alerted us and we managed to rescue little Won Ton. However it was pretty obvious she had a broken wing. We went to the vet (why does this always happen outside normal hours?!) who was amazing and amputated her wing even though he had never done that procedure before otherwise it would have been a case of bye bye Won Ton as it was an open fracture with the bone coming through her skin.

She is now living in my bathroom for a week (not ideal) but she is doing really well hopping in and out of the bath. I know it will be hard to reintroduce her to the other 4 girls and presumably there will be a risk of infection but she is over the worst of it according to the vet this morning. I know it isn't all rosy yet but it is looking ok.

We just had to save her as she was really badly picked on when we first got her and it took a couple of months to get her integrated. Since then she has been really affectionate and a real pet for us.

Just thought i'd let you know as you are all usually really helpful with your advice :)

Poor Won Ton (and you!), I hope she's recovering well and enjoying being spoiled!

If it's any help, we had a similar experience recently, resulting in one of our hens having the top half of her beak amputated which was quite traumatic for all of us. She's doing well and now back in with her friends but only after a gradual reintroduction.

Give her chance to recover and heal and take it slowly reintroducing her, there's lots of information on here somewhere about this (sorry, don't know how to do the links thing!), it worked for us and I hope it works for you too.

Good luck and best wishes to Won Ton :)
