We were sat having a damson gin watching the ducks splash around and Paul said what do we do in winter?

 

do we just break the surface? put a tub trug of warm water out there for half an hr a day?

 

just want to plan for winter rather than panic later on!

last winter i broke the ice and skimmed off the pieced to make a hole big enough for then tp dunk in ,

then when it go realy cold the ice was to thick they had a washing up bowl each (very comical to watch them) ,depending on what size ducks mine are mimitures .

Last year our two big ponds (mortar mixing troughs sunk into pallets) froze over too thickly to break. The ducks also have an old hand basin and a rubberised trug. We found that if we emptied these at night we could fill them again in the morning.

 

Seemed to work OK - Ducks didn't complain anyway

Just a shallow trug will suffice they only need to put their heads under and as long as they have water to drink they will be fine without a swim.

After last winter I am now an expert at breaking the ice on the duck pond. I broke it, picked it out with a spade and then tipped in a bucket of luke warm just to take the edge off. When it was really bad I did this twice a day. By the thaw I had a very large pile of ice lying behind the pond - hopefully better winter this year

Winter is going to be worse this year

Yes - just been told by the mother that there is predicted snow by end of September and a 'stonker' of a winter. Better dig out the microwave frisby thingy and the winter gloves
