Ophelia
Hi I am being rather stupid and can't work out how much flubenvet to give to my 3 girls. The instructions do not say anything about numbers just quantities of feed. Can I just add it to their porridge before they go to bed? Sorry for being a bit of a thickie. greyhoundgirl
No not thick it took me a lot of thinking to work out how to do it! I weighed the amount of food required on the the Flubenvet instructions, put it in a carrier and then added the Flubenvet. Gave it good shake and then fed the girls over the 7 days from the carrier. I guess it worked as I haven't seen any worms in the poo. Good luck
Tutti Frutti
Do you know what strength it is? Flubenvet 1% (comes in a 60g pot) should be mixed 3g Flub to 1kg feed. Flubenvet 2.5% (in 240g tubs) should be mixed 1.2g Flub to 1kg feed. It should be dosed very carefully and mixed into their normal feed, so they eat it constantly throughout the day for 7 days (so remove any unmedicated feed, no treats and limit their FR time). Weigh out 1kg or 2kg of pellets. Take a handful of the pellets and add the correct dosage of Flubenvet powder and shake well (I used old mealworm tubs or cereal storage tubs), then add more pellets, shake well, keep repeating until you've added all the feed. You'll need to keep mixing up the 1kg of feed - but you'll soon get an idea of how much feed they get through so by the end of the week you'll know how much feed to dose up. Once the 7 days are up, discard any unused feed. If you're concerned about the powder falling to the bottom of the container, you could add a little cod liver or olive oil to the feed to encourage it to stick. That's the official way to do it - more advice here PS They do say to double the dosage if you're treating gapeworm. Lavenders_Blue
It's best to add the Flubenvet to the pellets and feed ad lib for 7 days, as each chicken will take the correct amount of food, and therefore medication, according to age and weight. Personally, I think it's a bit hit and miss to add it to porridge - how would you know the correct amount to add? It's really simple to mix up into the pellets. I am assuming you have the 1% strength Flubenvet? You need to weigh out 2kg of pellets. Take a couple of handfuls and put into a large bowl and then add a little splash of oil (olive/vegetable/cod liver) just enough to coat those pellets. Then you need to add one level scoop of the Flubenvet powder to the pellets. Mix, mix and mix some more until the Flubenvet powder is sticking to the pellets and is well distributed. You can then start mixing in the rest of the pellets until you have mixed in the whole 2kg. So overall you are adding 1 scoop of powder to 2kg pellets. Feed the medicated pellets for 7 days in place of the normal pellets. Each chook will eat as much as needed. Ideally you should cut out free ranging and treats whilst being Flubenvet-ed to ensure each chook takes their fill. If you use up the 2kg before the 7 days is up - simply mix up another batch and keep going until 7 days is up. After 7 days - chuck out any left over medicated pellets and switch back to normal pellets. Congratulations, you now have worm-free chooks!
