splayed leg

Recommended Posts

I've just had delivery today of 5 ex-batt hens (I already have 6). One of them can't stand and I think she has a splayed leg - there isn't much movement but don't think it's broken. Probably due to postioning in cage in battfarm - poor thing. Is there anything i can do for her - can she have much of a life sitting all day.

Would really appreciate any help.

That's a shame. The rescuers usually weed out the ones with more obvious problems.

Could be a dislocation maybe?

I'd contact the rescuer for advice. Maybe a bit of rest is all that is required. Other than that, it might be best to get a vet to look at her.

Splayed leg is really a condtion in newly hatched chicks, which has to be treated straight away.

Hi

The BHWT Careline may be worth a call or a trip to the vet.

Have you felt the leg all the way up to her hip to feel for breaks? If you can't feel any (obviously go gently with her) then it is more than likely to be a strain or pulled muscles.

These lovely little ladies often come out of the cages by their legs so pulled muscles are very common. Also she has never really walked about before having spent all her time in the cage up close and personal to 7 other hens. Maybe she doesn't realise she CAN walk.

With the poorlies with non broken leg issues that I have brought home from rescue days I check for breaks, check for range of motion and then if they tick the no break and full range of motion boxes they get:

1. Deep litter bedding to cushion them if they do try to stumble around and to keep them off the cold floor as my runs are slabbed.

2. Asprin medicated water for the first few days (not licensed for poultry). Low dosage dissolvable.

3. Rhus Tox (homeopathic treatment) treated water water for a week after

4. Lots of rest and love

The other thing to be watchful of if she is not mobile is that she is getting food and water. I find bringing them near the drinker and then using a syringe squirt the water down back into the drinker from above her head height gets them interested.

Hope my ramblings make sense and are of some help.

Thank you for all your help and replies. Actually, I think it could be worse than thought. She actually can't stand for longer than a minute. When I pickk her up her leg seems floppy and when I move it - there is no resistance, i.e., I can move it back and forth from the hip and she doesn't tense any muscles. I keep my eye on her - I don't know if vet can help or not - just worried other chicks will be unkind to her! x

Can she 'grip' when you put a finger under her foot?

If not then it would be indicative of nerve damage. This could be due to severe bruising or maybe a break higher up.

You could try giving her arnica pilules ground up and sprinkled on her food. Available from heal food shops. It would help with the bruising.

If thinks don't improve in a day or two, I'd ask a vet to look at her.

This is very much how my little frizzle's leg was. The way the vet tested her was to have someone hold her on her back so you can access her legs, firstly move the good leg in a cycle type movement, and you can tell the leg does not want to move in any other direction. She then tested the bad leg and it moved in all directions. She said this was due to a break further up in the joint. I hope this helps. Good luck, I hope she gets better soon.
