Nature Chick
Hi all In light of another post of a similar theme I thought I would check if anyone has experience with Landbase Poultry in Essex. Our last girls were from Cambridge and we don't want to travel as far this time - Ardleigh is only 10mins away and thought that their website looked good. I thought I would decide when we go tomorrow and see what condition the hens are in. Thanks S Edited August 29, 2010 by Guest
Goldstar
Hi, I have never been, but would be interested in going sometime. Could you let me know how you get on please? Also did you have to make an appointment or can you just turn up? I like to look around places before I buy and dont want to feel pressurised into buying. (Hope that makes sense.) Nature Chick
Hi You need to make an appointment if you go in the week but you can pop in at the weekends - we are off there in a few minutes (nervous!!) so I will let you know how we get on. If we don't like what we see we will have to find somewhere else! I will keep you posted. S x

Guest
No experience of them but I always use hens 4 homes in Essex (Although today I realised that with my 4 new ex batts I have more rehomed than bought chickens!) I can thoroughly recommend Kirsty - who is as mad a as a box of frogs!

Thanks S I got my girls from Smilers Farm Whickford near Southend two weeks ago and Rhoda has laid every day since we got them home the others are still only 20 weeks but are all in good health. They have a very wide choice.
Nature Chick
Hi All We went to Landbase yesterday and came home with two beautiful new hens! A lovely Speckledy called Lily and an Amber Star called Daisy. Landbase was good, when we arrived there was no one around so we had a look around and saw all of the free range hens and geese roaming the fields and they all looked really healthy and happy. The POL girls were in two barns on deep straw bedding and looked happy and healthy too. There were no Redco left but the lady helped us choose two healthy hens. She was really knowledgable and said that she lets people pick then hen they like but when she catches it she tells them whether it is one she would take home and why. Through this process we went home with our third choice of Amber Star but the one that she said was the healthiest and we let her choose us the best Speckledy. We both felt confident to ask questions and she was interested to know what hen(s) we had at home. They were all vaccinated so fingers crossed we are off to a good start! We got the girls home and they came straight out into their run despite Mildred's best attempt to look big and scary! We went out after dark for a stroke and a chat - they are so soft! I don't know whether it is their breeds but they are both so silky! We are keeping them separate from Mildred for a few weeks in the wonderful little house my husband made for them which is fixed to the opposite end of the run to the eglu. On day one Daisy squeezed through the garden canes that were separating them from Mildred so we needed to add reinforcements!! Mildred is able to free-range through her hatch so isn't too crowded. So far so good
