Hoorah, I trickstered them all . I can't believe that they all fell for it. Caught Sunday and Lisa-Marie in the eglu when I shut the door, they thought it was bedtime. Once the clipping was done and they were back in the house I opened the door and as they darted out Cupcake wandered in to see what she was missing. Then once she was back in Paxo thought it was all over and went to bed only to be caught too. Suckers.

 

It wasn't as tricky as I expected and they didn't stuggle or sqwark (managed not to make anybody bleed). I was pleased to find that they'd filled out a tad and were growing more feathers on closer inspection. Even baldy bum has got signs of fluff coming.

 

I can let them out for a bit of free ranging now without keep thinking that they're gonna make a bid to clear the front hedge.

I'm too much of a wimp to clip any feathers. I'm scared that I'll end up making somebody bleed.

I'm afraid I never clipped my girls' wings as they never showed any signs of trying to escape over the fence....had they ever tried it, I would have done so, but I felt they were safer unclipped in case a dog or fox got into the garden and they needed to escape...... But I was also too worried to do it in case I accidentally made them bleed......

I only did it as I was rather shocked to discover just how much ground clearance they could achieve. Paxo and Lisa-Marie could get a good 5 foot and it was only because they were facing the wrong way that stopped it being an escape attempt. They both had really beautiful large wings and really are pretty feathered birds. Now I won't worry.

i clipped my girls wings (only one wing on each bird) and it made no difference - they still got to where they wanted to get to.......

Mine don't fly being large heavy birds, but I think the trick is to clip the wings before they have discovered they can fly. Once they know they can, the advantage has been lost

 

Remember just to cut the flight (ie longest) feathers on one wing only, and just cut them about half way down. Then there is absolutely no possibility of bleeding. All it does is unbalance them, like an aeroplane being out of trim, once they think they can't fly they generally won't try again. Do an Internet search to see if your birds are light and likely to fly and make sure they are wing clipped on one wing only before they have "got their wings" if you know what I mean. Or alternatively buy something which is not a flyer.#
