Aggressive chicken

Recommended Posts

We were just having our usual tea and biscuits in the garden watching the girls and I have just witnessed some outragious violence from one of my girls.

They were all pecking at a large bamboo we have and Mabel our GNR pecked off a large blade and ran off with it in her beak. Lisa our (white chicken) ran after her and tried to pull it out of Mabel's beak. When she couldnt succeed she grabbed Mabel's comb with her beak and started dragging her across the garden

We started shooing Lisa off but it took her a while to let go of Mabel. Meanwhile Mabel dropped the leaf.

I was really shocked  We checked Mabel over and there doesn't appear to be any injury - no blood or anything.

Is this normal hen behaviour over a leaf??? I was so worried Mabel was being injured.

Lisa is defo the head girl but I have never seen her be quite so agressive before, normally a withering look from her is enough for the other girls to leave her to it, but poor old Mabel was determined to keep her leaf. Neither of these girls are laying yet (one softie from Lisa last week and that been it) The bamboo in question is around 6ft wide and 6ft tall , so enough to go round lol!

Yes amount seems to have nothing to do with it. I am forever trying to point out the loads of x left when they are fighting over a tiny bit. I have an bit of a bully chicken (although she is calming down) and I can't say she has ever gone for the comb like that. More pecks.
