Frustrated - Sitting but not laying!!!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Our Cream Legbar is a little over a year old now, I think. When she started layinh, we would get beautiful sky blue eggs on a regular'ish basis! Now, she goes through the motions but never produces a thing. We don't even get the small round or jelly bean shaped eggs either.

We have tried almost everything and have almost given up. We would never get rid of her as we didn't buy her just for the eggs. However, a wee surprise once in a while would be nice.

All our hens are free range, good housing, access to grass, corn, pellets and water 24/7. We have tried different grits, ground Oyster Shells etc etc, still nothing!! They are all wormed and treated for mites etc and show no outward signs of any diseases.

I read something somewhere about an inward layer, perhaps she's one of them!!

Any ideas????

Regards, fujcube

Perhaps it's a Scottish thing . One of my Black Rocks has laid for 9 months and then since June all i've had from her is two or three wind eggs a week, the other one was laying regularly but over the last couple of weeks has really slowed down after only 11 months of laying.

Luckily my new girls are just starting to lay but it's not really what I expected when I got my girls.

I'm sorry to hear you are having problems. Me too with my girls. I had 3, all different breeds, and great eggs until about 4 months ago. then they went huge, watery and lots of softies. Now one has died, one has given up sitting, let alone laying, and the other still sits but just makes a gooey mess! they are all under 2 years old.

I'm sorry I can't offer any advice, I've tried everything too :wall: but good luck on your quest to find an answer!

Hi,

Well, I bought flubenvet and mixed it with their food as per the instructions. Then I kep them all locked up until the food had been eaten, otherwise they would just eat the grass and bugs!! This was approximately 2 - 3 months ago, so I would think she is wormed. She stopped laying before this though, so I can't really blame the medication.

I posted about this a few weeks ago. One of my girls was sitting in the nest every day and going through the motions, but not producing an egg.

Well, I am pleased to say that she eventually started laying again!

We had a wind egg, followed by a very odd shaped egg, then a couple of normal eggs, another wind egg again, a couple more normal eggs and a softie today.:lol:

She is an ex batt that I have had for almost a year, so I should think she is starting to wind down her laying career. Who can blame her?!

Your hen is obviously younger, so perhaps she won't have stopped laying. But maybe she just needed a break? Fingers crossed you will have eggs again soon
