Introductions with a cockerel

Recommended Posts

Oh boy have i missed you guys.... and yes i have a little challenge.

We acquired 3 gorgeous orps, 1 in lay and 2 youngsters, and we need to introduce them to our group including the cockerel.... we've had them several months now in sight of each other, and then split the pen, so they are in the same area, but still separate. all going very well. He is very keen to spend time with the new girls. however, we have started gentle introductions and he has done his thing and pulled a few feathers, however when he does his thing, another girl comes and attacks the new chook whilst she's a little occupied

I've tried extracting the naughty girl, but then another one seems to do the damage....

has anyone got any advice please or should i just keep them separate?

thanks

MMm ... its tricky, I dont think it was him that caused the damage. but gentle introductions and removing the trouble causers until they settle has to be the way forward. it would be such a shame to have to keep them separate, but she lost all her head feathers whilst i must only have turned away for 5! they had been so calm together, but they were obviously waiting for me to go for the feathers to fly :wall:

i've separated them again, and will just do coffee break sessions with them all together until i can trust them again.
