MarkBevBen
Hiya we're a bit worried about our Lottie. She's an Omlet girl, a 'Miss Pepperpot' and we've had all three for a week and a half now. Whilst she's always seemed the most reserved of the three girls, she now appears to be half sitting/standing and puffing her feathers out Her comb is a salmon pink colour. Should we seperate her from the other two who appear they're usual chirpy selves? We've tried to contact Omlet but they aren't open today. Any help or advice would be very much appreciated. We're new to chicken ownership and so far, everything seems to have been fine
CluckyBucks
Hello, im not an expert at this but my hen, Rogina seems to puff herself up and stand looking very miserable if shes going to pass a softie, so maybe Lottie is having trouble passing an egg? Im not totally sure about her comb if im honest, but do make sure that she is eating and drinking regularly. I would try seperating her for maybe an hour or two to see if it makes a difference. All the best. xx xx
MarkBevBen
Hiya Cluckybucks thank you for your reply. We've had two eggs so far today, although not sure who from - would assume it's Cottie and Dotte, given Lottie's current state, but you never know for sure! Will try seperating her and see how she goes.
CluckyBucks
Your very welcome Bear in mind that chickens also puff out there feathers and droop their wings if they are too hot, so maybe this could be another reason why? I hope she perks up soon. How long has she been like that for? xx xx
MarkBevBen
Have now let the other two out and Lottie seemed to perk up a bit, coming up to see what was going on. We first noticed last night, after our dog-walking-lady who also owns chickens alerted us to keep an eye on her Feel really awful letting the other two in the garden without Lottie
Chucky Mama
If she hasn't laid there may be a softie on the way.
sandyhas3chucks
there's no reason she can't pootle in the garden if she wants to is there? you ate watching, it might cheer her up, and she might find something or place to be comfortable
MarkBevBen
Well yesterday as soon as Iet the other two out she perked right up! Watched her and she ate and drank all afternoon. Will let them all out together today and see how we go
MarkBevBen
Let them all out yesterday and caught Lottie sitting out under a tree with Cottie She does seem to be more lethargic than the other two though. Have now spoke to Omlet, who advised me to get in touch with expert Barbara who has been a great help
MarkBevBen
Just wanted to let you know how we're doing with Lottie. We've had our three Omlet girls two weeks tomorrow. Everything appears to have been going great, one, two or three eggs a day and really happy inquisivite (naughty ) girls who we've been fascinated watching But since the weekend, poor Lottie hasn't been herself - 'poorly chicken' stance, lethargic, not interested in things, eating and drinking less and less. I took advice from Omlet and kept an eye on her. Well today I still wasn't happy, so we've been to our vet and she's got a bacterial infection, a temperature of 39 degrees and a fever bless her No wonder she was feeling under the weather So I've cleared the shed out completely and she's now in 'intensive care' there I've put food/grain, treats, water, soil/dust/grass along with shredded paper, so hopefully she'll feel at home. Fingers crossed she'll pull through, but our lovely vet said he couldn't guarantee. We should hopefully see some improvement by Friday. Any tips on giving chickens oral drops would be very much appreciated! So far the other two have been absolutely fine but I'm keeping Lottie in isolation for a week. Dizzy-Deb
Oh no Bev, I have only just caught up with this post. I hope Lottie is going to be ok, I have everything crossed for her. Did you vet say how she may have picked up the infection ? xx
MarkBevBen
Thanks for your message Deb So far, so good, hopefully with all our fingers and paws crossed. She seemed to have slept last night on the slatted table, so gently helped her down this morning and she sraight away went to her pot of grub and started munching away I let her have her brekki and gave her a medicine - swaddling in an old towel and a splash of Ribena is the way forward there - got it down her no problem I think (hopefully not me wishful thinking) that her comb and wattles are going more red. Will keep you posted, how are your girls? xxx
MarkBevBen
Sorry forgot to say, the vet didn't say how she may have caught the infection and I forgot to ask. I'll ask him on Friday when I ring. He did say the others are unlikely to catch it, but it's better to keep them separate which I'm doing. Thankfully we've got the shed, which I've turned into the 'isolation ward' I asked if Ben our doggy would be okay too and he said Ben wouldn't catch it. Dizzy-Deb
Hi Bev ooh that encouraging, she sounds a lot better. Got everything crossed for her and that she goes from strength to strength. You making your shed the isolation ward has got me thinking of what I will be able to use when the inevitable happens to one of mine (hopefully not for a while but know you just dont know when one will become ill). There are so many different things that chickens can be stricken with its a bit scary. You are doing so well, especially as only just had yours too and everything is new. Glad its nothing that Ben can be affected by, its always worth asking. I have to be careful too as i do have other pets and dont want any risk of accidentally passing something on to them. My chickens are fine thanks for asking, they are little eating machines and kind of suprises me how much they do scoff . Hubby has started the WIR and hopefully will be finished next weekend. xx
MarkBevBen
Hiya Deb and thanks for your well wishes Great to hear your girls are doing okay and looking forward to seeing pictures of your new run too! Well after a good start this morning, it seems poor Lottie has gone a bit downhill She seems more lethargic and withdrawn, not wanting much to do with treats and sweetcorn even which is a favourite! Been checking on her regularly today and she's also just done a watery yellow bowel movement, not sure what might have brought that on. I'll keep on with the anti-biotics, she's due another dose this evening and try to keep positive. The other two have been themselves, although I have noticed a bit of dung on their derrierres. Fingers crossed they aren't coming down with the same as Lottie
