I'm the proud new owner of 2 beautiful Blue-laced Wyandottes (LF). After 3 years of planning I finally did it! Anyway my question is (and sorry if it has been asked before), should I vaccinate my hens? The breeder told me that pure breeds aren't usually vaccinated, but obviously I want the best for my hens. We live near to a lake with lots of wild geese etc. Can anyone please advise? All help appreciated. Some vaccines need to be purchased in large quantities so that's one reason why smaller breeders don't vaccinate. Hybrids are produced in larger numbers which is why they tend to come already vaccinated. I have a mix of hybrid and pure breeds - some have been vaccinated others not. Redwing Posted September 13, 2010 Share Posted September 13, 2010 Vaccinations need to be done at hatch or within a couple of weeks of hatching (depending on the vaccine) so its not possible to vaccinate the birds now Your breeder is correct in that most pure breeds arent vaccinated, I've hatched about 160 chicks this year none of which have been vaccinated. Commercial hybrids are nearly always vaccinated though A few breeds that are prone to certain conditions may be vaccinated against just those but Wyandottes are pretty rock solid Good choice of bird Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was concerned about salmonella, in particular, as we'll be eating the eggs. Anyway, thanks again for the replies. Photos to follow...not worked that one out yet!
