staceychristie
Hi, Rosie appears to have been bleeding from her preen gland above her tail. I think it's self inflicted, as when she's cleaning herself she is VERY rough with it. The other girls don't bother her too much so I don't think she's being bullied. Covered her area with GenViolet spray, and vets wound powder - but she's like a kid picking a scab . It doesn't look sore around the localised area, and I've checked for mites/lice etc, and found none (powdered every few weeks) and she doesn't seem to be irritated by the mess/clot. Needless to say that she then wipes small amounts of blood over her feathers. Anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do? Vet said just to keep area clean and free from dirt.... but she is a messy hen. Thanks Stacey
Egluntyne
I'd try a poultry saddle on her. That should make the gland inaccessible for a few days.
sandyhas3chucks
I have used a nappy rash cream (of course not licensed or meant for poultry) called metatanium, on sore bots and tums where nothing else has helped and it seems to calm sore areas on contact. (worth a try maybe, apply very thinly) have you sprayed her though for mites "just incase"?
staceychristie
I've sprayed for mites, wormed them all, and have (quite) a good cleansing regime. Poultry saddle sounds a good idea, but she's the kind that would just moan 24/7 about wearing it (you know the type). I'll look at the rash cream tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
