I have a horse in livery at a local farm and the manure heap is getting higher. The farmer mentioned he would like to re-use the bedding somehow as a lot of it is just wet rather than soiled.

 

I'd like to hand him examples of projects he could attempt with a big pile of shavings. Has anyone heated water / made fire bricks / or anything else with this kind of material?

No but I've changed my livery yard over to pelleted bedding which rots down a lot faster and creates less mess as you turn the wet back in until it cant absorb any more, only removing droppings. Aquamax and White Horse are the best I've tried, you might mention it to him
