Cissie and Ada have bald bums and Cissie is a bit bald round the tail. I've caught Madge having a little peck - not vicious but she must have a taste for feathers. Madgeis not top chook and Cissie was chasing her off when they were FRing yesterday, but Cissie does not seem to do this in the run.

 

Anti-peck stray has not worked, I can't be there all the time to squirt Madge with water when it happens. So I have isolated her. My question is how long do I isolate Madge to try to break her out of this?

I found that it took 3 weeks with one of my worst offenders. She reverted to her bad habits after a while, so now wears a bumper bit.

I was going to BB her yesterday but we can't bring ourselves to do it. Problem is that today they are all confused by the isolation set up. We might have to bite the bullet and put in a bumper bit - I'd prefer one upset girl rather than three.

I have had my feather plucker in separate accommodation for several months now. After one hour of freeranging together the other day (fully supervised) she plucked a feather from one of the others. It seems to be habit she is stuck with.

 

Good luck with the BB. I did try this and it worked for a while before it slipped out of place after a few weeks. I found it so traumatic trying to fit another I gave up. My hens are fine with their new living arrangements - it's just more hastle for me!
