feather eating

Recommended Posts

I have a bossy warren who when my other two pols have a dust bath pulls out single feathers from them and eats some not all of the feathers . I have watched her closely but apart from the occasoinal quick peck there is no such feather pulling to be seen. They are on layers pellets and a handfull of mixed corn and veggies and have acesses to oyster shell grit. I put Life guard in their daily water and I am on day 5 of worming them with FlubeNvet. Cant see any evidence of worms yet.The warren is pretty much finished growing her feathers as she was a bit scruffy when I got her.She is about 18 months old and very friendly to me.Is she lacking in something. Am just a bit worried in case feathers get stuck in her crop. Any thoughts or ideas?

You could use some anti peck spray on the 'victim'. It might deter the feather eating.

It is sometimes suggested that hens who eat feathers are short of protein. Unlikely if she is eating good quality layers pellets. You could give them a handful of dried meal worms every now and then as a protein boost.
