Hi,

 

I thought I would post this to the people out there who have chickens & suffer regular fox attacks. We live near fields & have had chickens of our own for 10 months & we haven't suffered one fox attack yet. We have secured where the chickens spent their day. We also have a dog who quite often goes and wee's up the fence. We feel this has helped prevent the attack. If you or a friend has a dog, let the dog go and leave it's mark where your chickens roam.

I think that you could well get caught out relying on this method alone abbie-kate The pheromones of a male dog (or a man) can deter a fox to a degree but will by no means stop a hungry fox. You may well be in an area surrounded by rural foxes which are less brave than their cousins in the town. Come cubbing though when the vixens are struggling to look for food, you could get caught out so be careful

Am pleased that you have been lucky so far, but I would urge you to up your security.

 

If a harsh winter comes, or an injured or older fox, or starving vixen with a hungry litter to feed is about, it will go for the easiest option - unprotected livestock.

Wouldn't work in my garden. I have seen both fox and dog in the garden at the same time - only when they actually spot each other does the fox make a speedy retreat with my dog in vocal pursuit.

Our next door but one neighbours had a chicken taken by a fox at 11.30am in May when their dog was in the garden! (chickens were free ranging but still!?) Broad daylight!

But what seemed to have worked for me (all the necessary superstitiuos rammel) was chasing a dog fox down my garden.

 

No evidence since............................... yep just luck

Groan. Have not seen a fox in the garden for years. Now, when I should be getting chooks at the weekend, Mum spots one having a snooze on the wall this morning. How do they know? I'll have to get my brothers to wee in the garden whenever they pop in then.
