Loss of fluffy feathers around the back

Recommended Posts

Two of my hens have lost the fluffy feathers around their backsides. There doesn't appear to be any signs of a prolapse but I am worried about the bare skin.

I lost a couple of hens shortly after purchasing them and their problems started in the same way. Took them to the vet - he diagnosed coccidiosis. I gave them antibiotics and isolated them but they still died. Not sure it was the right diagnosis.

Could be a moult. They often lose their knicker feathers, and the skin goes bright red as a response to daylight, and can look quite alarming.

They could be plucking at each others feathers.

Any other signs or symptoms? Are they eating and drinking, and still in lay?
