oneyolktoanother
one of our hens has been treated at the vets for a impacted crop she had her crop washed out and picked up well, the vet advised us to take their grit away from them and now a week later she has gone very weak struggling to stand up and walk and is doing green poos, took her to the vets this morning they gave her a pain killer but said theres nothing they can do and it best to put to her to sleep so i have been waiting for hubby to get back from work and make a decision together they said we could take her back at six but now i have started thinking could this be because of taking the grit away? the vet said as they do free range when we are there but otherwise they are in their run that they wouldnet need grit? please can someone give me advice thanks in advance
Powerlady
I do use grit..even though it's said that they find it natrually when they free range. Would be suprised to hear that she was poorly because of taking away grit, but sure some one else with better advice will be along soon. Chucky Mama
I very much doubt that the lack of grit has contributed to this issue at all. I don't offer any grit to mine. They free range and pick up enough bits and pieces naturally. Layers pellets and mash are balanced for laying hens. If they never get out it is worth adding grit. Many leave it at the bottom of the feeders anyway. Sorry to hear about your girl though
Egluntyne
I think you are confusing grit and calcium. Mixed poultry grit does have bits of sea shell as a source of soluble calcium in it in addition to the actual grit, but it isn't the same thing. You could try her with a soluble calcium supplement, but as she is under the care of the vet, I'd check with her/him first.
