Help! Chickens not laying? Could they be boys?

Recommended Posts

I have 4 chickens, two are definitely female but i'm really not sure about the other two. They both have large combs and wattles, and both have those floppy over tail feathers (sorry, first time owner!! and not at all technical!)

I will try to attach some photo's, they are mainly of sadle feathers as I have read that this is the best indication. One is a Rhode Island Red and the other an Autralorp. Both are adorable and soppy enough to be cuddles so Im keeping my fingers crossed that my growing suspicion that they are male is just me worrying too much!

All my chickens are now between 24 and 25 weeks old, Ive had no eggs and no crowing!! :?

Can anyone help?

Many thanks x

My Australorp was very manly and we even discussed rehoming as she was so friendly that it would have been a pity to take her back to the breeders for the pot. However, I'm pleased to say we had a happy outcome with her.

The photo does show very manly face furniture...I'd say cockerel. Have you asked the breeder? A good breeder will take back any mistakes as long as you bought them as sexed birds.

Thanks Janty... I haven't spoken to the breeder as yet ...she is lovely and I know there wouldn't be a problem taking them back but i think we're too attached to them!!! The australorp was always questionable to be honest, he/she's just so soppy and tactile.... we always hoped it would be a girl!!

Its only now at 25 weeks and no eggs that im starting to wonder?? my Rhodie on the other hand can be quite aggressive towards the australorp and she/he really goes for him/her!

Kelly !egg!
