jam
Been reading about shamo's in this months practical poultry and have been left slightly confuzled. What is the the difference between a ko shamo, o shamo, chu shamo and just shamo?! Have recently developed a love for game birds like the shamo and malay. I just love their reptilian look. Ive noticed ko shamo bantams crop up at some auctions and would love to get some... maybe for a christmas pressie but are bantam shamos equally aggressive towards each other as LF ones? laurmurf
I share your love of hard feathers! Shamos are lovely but are very very 'game' (agressive) both male and female shamos will fight each other and just about any other chook in the neighbourhood and from a very young age! You would need lots of separate housing. Ko shamos are bantam and have a keen following Shamos (or O Shamo) are large fowl Chu Shamo are medium but I'm not that aware of anyone breeding and showing these much. Asil are similar-ish to Shamo. Getting stock can be difficult, you tend to have to know somebody. Even joining the Asian Hardfeather Club needs a recommendation from an existing member as does joining the hardfeather forums on some poultry websites. Theft is a huge problem with hardfeathers: a large number were even stolen directly from the Fed one year! we used to keep Malays - they are lovely birds, come in bantam and (very) large fowl and not enough people keep 'em. They tend to be looked down on by some other hard feather enthusiasts for the lack of game-ness that makes them a dream to keep! We had to give up our large fowl because my free ranging area didn't work out and they do need a fairly large area. I would be keen to get back into it and keep bantams: they are lovely birds!
