Hi

Im after your advice again. One of my hens is becoming quite bald around the neck, the feathers dont seem to have gone completely for the whole length, just lost some "fluff".

 

Ive tried to see if there are any mites or anything but I cant see anything moving ,just that the skin looks whitish and almost powdery there !

 

Im wondering as one possibility that it is cos she has been sleeping in the nest with the straw and whether its rubbing it off.thanks to everyone for reading this would appreciate any advice or others experience of this.

She could be moulting. Three of my girls are moulting at the moment and have lost most of their neck feathers and their frilly knickers but if you look closely you can see more feathers coming through so in places they look like hedgehogs.

Thanks it will be such a relief it is that, id imagined something awful. ive just lost one hen.Ill look tomorrow when its light for what you said.it was just the powdery looking stuff that made me wonder whether it was parasites.

If it was moulting, the whole feather would have come out. Sorry that's not very helpful. Don't know anything about it but could it be depluming mite
