chooklady
I'm very excited, I haven't been on here for a while but just wanted to share something. My neighbour has an allotment and she was telling me a week or so ago that she was thinking of giving up half of it as she can't cope, she works as a nurse and has been finding it hard to keep up with the allotment, well this started me thinking and I approached her yesterday and said would she be willing to let me use the other half and I'll pay her half the rental. Well she agrred and thought it was a great idea. So I'm looking forward to going there soon and having a look around and getting some plans hatched for what I want to grow. I've been trying to get a job for some time with no luck so maybe making us more self sufficient is nearly as good. Thanks for reading Nicola
stehaggan
OOOOh very exciting times we got our allotment last year... I cannot beleive how much money it saved us really. Initially we had to buy tools and I wanted a shed but really it was well worth it as obviously I can re-use them. I have 2 tortoises which I haven't had to buy any food for since my first lettuce leaves started sprouting.. they used to cost about £1 for a bag of salad every 2 or 3 days. We grew loads in such a small amount of space and it was really nice having it all fresh- you soon realise how old and expensive supermarket food is. Also it gives you the chance to try things you wouldn't normally buy.. i never used to eat courgette eugh or beetroot but now my favourite cake is courgette lemon drizzle and I make sweet courgetter relish which is devine, plus I sell them and get some £££ too for chicken feed and seeds etc. In addition, we feed whatever we have left hanging around to the chickens.. they love their greens and another great thing is the dog loves kale too which we grow loads of.. oh and our strawberrys too ;-D You will have lots of fun.. I am still amazed at how tiny seeds turn into food lol... Mine is a bit of a mess at the minute as i need to get some digging done but what i would suggest is plant more and thin it out rather than leaving lots of gaps... and bonus - store your chicken poo and old straw etc in a bag and use it in your compost!!! and get lots of worms for your girls x Good luck with your digging!! chooklady
Thanks for that. I do already save all the chicken poo from the trays and give a lot of it to the lady who's allotment I am going to share. I do have 5, 8 x 4 feet beds at home and a greenhouse so it will be great to grow more variety and also bigger quantities. I can't wait until I can get things underway, I've been checking out all my seed packets today and seeing what else I fancy growing.
