making curtains

Recommended Posts

has anyone ever made curtains?

are they easy to make?

I was in Boyes (a "you name it, we sell everything" sort of store) yesterday and this couple were buying metres and metres of Christmas fabric 8) I decided that curiosity took over basic politeness and decided to ask what they were making :D

so, both of them (really enthusiastically) told me that they were making Christmas curtains :D:D (cos HE wanted some 8) )

so I wondered...are they easy? or should I keep my head down and not bother :anxious::lol:

cos I really, really fancy Christmas curtains :D

I've made my own in the past. It all depends on how professional you want them to look. I was fortunate that the pattern was easy to match on the material I used and I already had separate liners so all I need to do was sew the fabric up the middle (to join two widths) add tape at the top and then hem them. If you are sewing in lining it can be trickier and if you want a fancy top (ie pinch pleat, goblet etc). A basic curtain is one of the easiest things you can make. As a basic rule measure the window and then double it for the width of material you need.

Others will give you better advice. I'm a bit of a rough and ready merchant.

I've made simple muslin curtains for a friend which just involved cutting off the right length, hemming top and bottom, and then sewing a channel for the hanging wire. Not done proper curtains, but I would imagine they'd bet fairly similar and you'd just need to sew on a header tape in order to hang them up on the hooks. What are Christmas curtains anyway? Are they just curtains, but in a Christmassy fabric?

yes :D:D exactly that :D

I like the idea of simple, hang from a line ones, they will only be up until the decorations go down, so Im not wanting totally professional ones :D

we have a glass doors from the living room to the back room, and the draft is unbelievable, we have been known to "pin" a blanket in the way. and the wall is bare plaster, so I wont want to put a full curtain rail up until we decorate.

oooh, Karin, you have made my Christmas curtain plan very achievable, in record time :lol: thank you

when we decorate  Ill make some posh ones :D:D
