Cold Evenings but chooks not returning to Eglu

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is to do with the recent spell of icy weather but for the last two evenings and for several nights last week our two ladies have refused to go into the Eglu Go at dusk and remain outside in the run until late evening, up till 11.30. I do not know if they go in after this point. They seem well otherwise and are behaving normally but I think they really would be better off inside the Eglu during these cold nights; last night the temperature in leafy Bromley dropped to -2 degrees.

During the earlier mild weather they would already be inside at dusk or after and I would go and shut up the eglu with no problems.

any thoughts would be most welcome!

One thought could be there is something nasty in the Eglu that they don't like. Could be worth taking it all apart and giving it a really could clean (using Poultry Shield or something similar - or a Jet wash is pretty good as well!) to get rid of any nasties lurking. Not a fun job in this weather I know...!

Or have you changed anything? Put something different in the poo tray, or in the nesting box? They can be very funny about change....

Is there light form the house lighting up the run?

this could be it - the house and run point to our kitchen where there are always lights visible through a large window. i may need to lower the light escaping from the window.

However i will also give the Eglu a good wash over the weekend to see if this makes a difference.

thanks for your help.
