hopetofinish
Hi I have a black nera who looked fine this morning in the WIR, but now at 11.00am is sitting very quietly outside with her head slightly down looking very miserable. Fairly sure she laid an egg first thing. Not sure whether to bring her in, pop her back in the eglue and shut the door or bring her indoors, but then she will feel really cold when put back outside. Any advise greatly received as this chicken belongs to our youngest!
meezers
I'd just keep an eye on her for a while. She may just be a bit fed up with the cold. Most of mine are either sitting on the ground, or snoozing on perches. They are all fine, just not as active as usual, I expect they're conserving energy. If she's no better later, then maybe you could bring her inside for a while, see if she perks up.
Ain't Nobody Here
Does her crop feel normal? One of mine behaved a bit like that and had sour crop.
Egluntyne
Maybe she is about to lay a soft egg.
meezers
Just a thought. You could top up her drinlking water with some hot water - mine love a good drink of warm water on acold morning. You could also try a porridge of few pellets soaked in hot water - leave them until they are warm before feeding.Again, it might cheer her up if it's nothing physical. hopetofinish
Thanks for all the speedy replies, this really is such a lovely helpful place to be! Temperature has bobbed up above freezing, and I cooked them up some porridge and gave them bacon rind. She looks much perkier now. Will be shutting my door on the eglu tonight. mostin
How old is she? has she moulted yet this year? One of mine was looking really miserable this morning and then it dawned on me that she is one of the chooks who is yet to moult...........typical........waiting for the coldest weather to start
Chucky Mama
How is she at the now? Any improvement? I cooked them up some porridge and gave them bacon rind. I'd be a bit careful with bacon rind. I can't imagine that it is something that can be easily digested for a chicken - could be wrong and happy to be corrected. Aunty e
Mine have always loved it along with dead mice, frogs and the occasional unlucky sparrow...
