Chortle Chook

Stolen Joys

Recommended Posts

At last we have a thaw here in Oxfordshire. This morning, while my chooks were happily engaged on thier porridge, I decided to inspect my wormery and swap the layers round. Most of the poor worms were frozen solid, but I found a few wrigglers and had them on a trowel ready to move them up into a warmer layer. Then along came my Poland Frizzle, Dee Dee. Normally blind as a bat because of her hair do . . .

'Barp?' says she curiously, then

'Beep Beep, Bwaarp' really intrigued, then

BWARP, BWARP,B W A R P :!: - very excited

Bye Bye last of my worms :(

Sometimes it is best not to jostle with the others over porridge. A lesson to be learnt for the sales

Ah but humans don't sound so nice. I just love hen noises. That is why I got them. I'm no great egg eater.

Yes we enjoy chatting to the girls too.

We have 38 chooks they are all call Bubb, Bubby, Bubbah or Bubbs with 2 or 3 notable exceptions. Those that were poorly, those that had and still have a heavy moult (called Zippy), and the broody that hatched one of of the duck eggs called Mumma.

If I walk down the field the chooks leave their scratching (or other busy activity), I always say "Hello Bubbs" - they always answer.

Or if I'm in the workshop off the barns they tend to amble in with a purpose and crouch looking at something precarious on a bench - I usually say "No Bubbs" and chase them out then they come out with a few chicken expletives when they are shooed out.

Bless them ;)
