Looks like the right place to start!

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I have just found this site and, by the looks of it, it is going to be very useful indeed! We have just moved into a large old place in Carmarthenshire and we're planning to get ourselves some chickens in the spring, once the bad weather is more or less gone.

We have always had rescue dogs so we will be getting to go for some ex-battery hens as well as some purebreeds. We have already bought a couple of runs. They are exactly the same as the one in the pictures in Kalico's "Hi, thinking of getting chickens" thread - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=72521

The birds can sleep in the runs at night but we want to build a larger walk in run so they can wander about a bit more during the day. I have looked at the Hills of Devon site for welded mesh prices and, hopefully, this will mean they would have a double layer of defences against possible fox attacks.

Does anyone know of any ex-battery contacts in the area we might be able to get in touch with? We are about 8 miles north of Llanelli.

Thanks for such a great site. :D

Hi there and welcome to the forum.

I count finding this site and getting chickens amongst the best things I've ever done.

In answer to your question about ex-batts, if you Google Battery Hen Welfare Trust you will be able to find your local contact, who I think is in Gwernogle, South Wales.

There are also people involved in ex-batt rescue who are regulars on here too so they will probably drop you a line too.

All the best with your plans.

Dawn x

Hi, welcome to the forum :D

The BHWT probably have an ex batt rescue co-ordinator in your area - details will be here http://www.bhwt.org.uk/cms/index.php/contact-us

Have a look through the FAQ section on here for all sorts of useful info and do ask if you cant find what you are looking for

A decent run is a good start - Hills of Devon is a great place for weldmesh - their service is excellent :D
