Harrietshens
Hello, I am new to chicken keeping - only had our hens three weeks - but I wonder if someone could offer some advice please. One of the hens, a 12 week old cochin seemed a little sleepy yesterday, occasionally closing one eye. This morning she came out into the run and then sat snoozing, while the others were scratching around. She's eating and drinking OK, and I just checked her again and and she's not asleep now. Is this normal behaviour for hens to sometimes be a bit sleepy? Should I bring her in for a warm, as it's snowy outside?
Cranfield Kate
Mt ex batt peeper was doing that last year. she'd look like an old lday dozing off while the other two ran around being chickeny. your chicken might be absolutely fine but peeper was ill and we had to have her put down. unless someone cleverer than me comes on and reassures you I'd be inclined to take her to the vet.... sorry.... BocBoc
How's your cochin doing today?
Harrietshens
She seems to be OK thanks. She's still occasionally closing one eye, but is perky, eating and drinking etc. She's always the last out of the coop in the morning - maybe she just likes a lie-in or needs a bit more sleep than the others? I'm not an expert but one of our hens is absolutely not a 'morning' chicken. She is always last out, staggers around groggily, peers around the run as though she has no idea where she is, stands on one leg for a while and stretches, sometimes perches straight away for a little extra nap... meanwhile the other three are charging around scoffing. We always joke that she looks like she's massively hungover. But she just takes a little bit of time to get going - an hour or so later, she's full of beans and as happy as anything. Keep an eye on your hen at the weekend when you've got a bit more time, and if she seems fine usually, then she might just be a chicken that likes to take things a bit more slowly.
