Garden Plants

Recommended Posts

Hi

I recently posted about how to look after your garden when you have hens. As a result of this we've decided to plant a few plants/bushes just to make the garden look a bit nicer. It wuoldn't want to be anything too big but something that might look a bit attractive and could survive the hens.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Katy

Azaelea's, camellias (sp!) shrub roses, heathers - that kind of thing works fine in our garden. Anything woody seems to stand half a chance. Especially if it it evergreen - the leaves seem to be tougher and so less apealing is my theory!

You may need to protect their roots from the chooks scratching though, until they get good and established. I know I have lost a couple of new plants due to their feet rather than their beaks... A bit of chicken wire or trellis seems to do the trick - or whatever you have lying around!

Good luck!

Fruit trees, we have apples, plums and cherries that love the manure :D They are ok with most evergreens, you will have to buy big shrubs so that they don't get dug up before they can establish. i have found that upturned wire hanging baskets protect the most vunerable plants and have got away with growing a few herbacious plants that i protect in this way when they are just coming up in the spring.
