maxjam
Hiya, We have 25 chickens and up until the recent cold snap were getting 15-18 eggs per day Since the bad weather though the number of eggs we get has dropped to roughly 3-5 per day and has never recovered. I have been giving them both poultry spice and tonic for the past week in an effort to get them going again but no luck. I also gave the coop a really good clean and sprayed for red mite 'just in case' at the weekend and today was rewarded with just 2 eggs The chickens (all hybrids) look healthy enough with no obvious signs of any problems - they just aren't laying. Anyone else suffering with this and does anyone have any tips as to what to try next?!?
sage
Sound about normal to me, they will pick up as the days become longer and the weather warmer in the spring. Sage
hotchick
Hiya I have been experiencing the same with my two. I haven't had an egg of either since before Christmas, when the weather much colder than now. I am reassuring myself that they're going through their seasonal eggopause and they'll be dropping them like it's hot again soon, but it is nonetheless worrying, especially if you're as inexperienced as me. Hopefully we'll get our daily eggs back in time for easter
oneyolktoanother
we have four hens and only one of oura has just begun to lay, i think when the days start getting longer they will start laying again
alet_chicken
We have 9 hens and at the moment exactly one of them is in lay. She is an ex-batt and I get an egg from her every day, bless her little socks. We did get more eggs during the really cold snap mid-December, but I think the prolonged cold is getting to them now. Roll on spring with its longer days!
docsquid
Ours didn't stop laying, but the productivity did go down during the cold snap combined with two hens moulting, however the lower productivity of our hybrid girls was balanced by two of my three banties coming into lay. Although we usually only got one or two eggs a day, we only had one day with no eggs. With Gwladys laying her first egg today, we now have 6 of 8 girls in lay (two POL new girls still not laid, but only been here 3 days), and getting 4 or 5 eggs a day. As soon as the days started to get longer their laying picked up. I'm sure it will happen for you as well.
maxjam
Okay thanks for the replies, I'm glad to see I'm not the only one! I figured it was normal for there to be some drop off but when I collected my recently batch of food from our 'chicken lady' she told us that the hybrids she sold us will slow down a bit but not to that extend and was quite concerned. As I mentioned they seem happy enough though and barring the day of the original post have been getting 5 eggs per day this week. Hopefully as it gets warmer/lighter they will pick up again
